An “Intervention” in International Politics and its Consequences: The Afghanistan Intervention of Soviet Union

Umut BEKCAN*

Abstract

Soviet Union’s (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics-USSR) intervention in Afghanistan is a direct support to the Afghani administration to protect socialist regime from the rebellion. Afghanistan’s not being a member of East block has formed the reason for the western states, especially United States of America (USA) to pay great attention to the situation and struggle with Soviets indirectly. The intervention shown as the end of the detente between East and West blocks has lasted very long than expected and brought about the results that affect whole world. In this study; first of all, the concept of “intervention” in international relations will be mentioned, then Soviets’ intervention in Afghanistan will be analysed in terms of its reasons, effects in international area and legal situation in the framework of United Nations (UN) system and comparing with the United States’intervention in the same country and finally it will be emphasized that the support to Afghani mujahideens has affected the development of fundemental terrorism.
