Okan Haluk AKBAY*

Abstract

Native speakers of a language use idioms and idiomatic expressions very frequently. Idioms make the expressions more efficient, colourful, and vivid. Idioms are also very interesting even in the point that reflect the culture, social structure, history, way of life, traditions etc. Idioms are one of the essential constituents in a foreign language that a learner should master. A strong knowledge of idioms will help students be better speakers. Lack of knowledge can lead to misunderstanding and some serious problems about communication. Therefore, it can be said that the teaching of idioms and idiomatic expressions requires special attention in the curriculum. This article is about a field study which was done at Erciyes University, in the Japanese Language and Literature Department. In this study, 29 Japanese idioms about “hand” were selected and students were asked the correct meanings of the idioms. The research findings have been analyzed from various points of view.
